The recent events in Japan have entered into many human psyches across the globe. The earthquake, tsunami and nuclear concerns in Japan have affected us in different ways.
Tips on How to Deal With Traumatic Events From Afar
Take care of yourself. Taking care of your health (what you eat and exercise) will help you to cope with stress.
Reduce the amount of news coverage you watch. Being up to date on current issues is important but it’s ok to give yourself permission to take a news break. If you have friends and family affected by the recent events in Japan taking a short news break will reduce your stress and anxiety.
Channel your energy into giving. Many people report that giving back by donating money to an appeal, raising money, awareness, and volunteering helps to feel positive and helpful. There are many local and international organizations such as the Red Cross and the National and Cultural Community Center of Northern California (JCCNC) that are raising money and awareness. Also, you can start a fundraiser in your local community, such as cake sale or quiz night.
Talking to your children about Japan. Provide your children age appropriate information, and do not overburden them with your thoughts and feelings about the situation. Listen to what they have to say about the event. Your child may need more holding and cuddles during this time, especially younger children who are watching the news coverage but do not fully understand what it happening. Using books can be a great way to talk to your children about Japan. The School Library Journal provides great tips on how to talk to your children and book resources. Thank you – my girlfriend returned to finish her studies in Japan shortly after the events.
While the re-build was underway in classic Japanese style, the stories of background radiation were/are still going around.
Good advice for keeping a level head!
