What Does The Contents of Your Refrigerator Say About You?

Last night, I opened my refrigerator and was shocked by the amount of food items!  My initial reaction was “how can a family of three have so much food in the fridge?”  The contents of my fridge are revealing about my family and our personalities.  We like to eat and cook, frequently entertain, outgoing, and enjoying trying new foods.

The contents of a person’s fridge can give insight into their eating habits, lifestyle, and personality.  According to UMM, there are numerous fridge personalities.

The Minimalist. People who like to organize their world tend to have a clean fridge with minimal food content. The Minimalist is good about cleaning and organizing their fridge. Some Minimalists (not all!) avoid entertaining at home because they cannot cook, choose not to, or prefer to dine out.

The Indulger. Indulgers love food.  Their fridge shows a love affair for food items. Indulgers are passionate people, and buying food is their passion. Some Indulgers may have a tendency to over eat.  The indulger is a great person to visit because they will have variety of foods to choose from.

The Hoarder.  The hoarder loves food but also has trouble throwing or giving fridge contents away. The contents of the fridge are packed.  This can make it difficult to find food items in the fridge.

The Chef/Entertainer.  We love entertainers and chefs! Their fridge is full of interesting foods and you are guaranteed to not go home hungry. Like the Indulger, the Chef/Entertainer is passionate about food and cooking.  The fridge will be always be stocked with food.

UMM says, no matter what type of fridge personality you are, cleaning and reorganizing your fridge is a good thing. UMM has a simple rule, “If I buy one food item, I have to eat or throw something away in my fridge.”

Thanks Aaron for the comment, "what about if you have roommates?"  Having roommates can change the fridge personality.  If you have one roommate that is a hoarder and another that is a minimalist, this can create a complicated dynamic.  If you have roommates and your fridge personalities are different, have a direct conversation and make rules for how the fridge needs to be maintained.

The Forgetter, or The Lazy Hoarder. I buy stuff, stick it in the fridge, and rediscover the thriving experiments weeks or months later. Labeling items with purchase/expiration dates would help.

Ha! Mine is full of food because my in-laws were just here. They raid the local grocery store every time they come so my mother-in-law can cook full meals for everyone (resulting in boxes of leftovers). And a pizza box from when she took the night off.
