Staycation

Need a holiday? Try a staycation!

As I write this article, the fog rolls in on a typical San Francisco summers day. On foggy summer days, I crave the sun, warmth and dream of being on a remote island off the Indian Ocean.   For many people, it can be difficult to take a vacation, particularly with high unemployment rates, job insecurity, tight budgets, and the general cost of holidays.  Many people are opting to stay at home and enjoy what the local area has to offer.

This summer, if are on a tight budget or have limited annual holiday leave, UMM hopes that you are able to take time out of your daily schedule to relax and unwind.

UMM offers simple tips on ways to enjoy and maximize your staycation:

No phones/iPads/computers - Seriously, switch off your computer, iPad and phones, even for a few hours.  Disconnecting from the virtual world will allow you to be less distracted and enjoy being present in whatever you decide to do on your staycation.

Plan your staycation – Things to think about when planning your staycation include how long you want to take off (half a day, day, weekend), your budget, and whether you want to go afar or stay near home.  If you cannot take time off work, take your staycation in the weekend or on your next planned day off.

Staycation with or without my kids? – You choose!  Many parents want a break from their children and if you have access to a babysitter take a few hours off from the kids.  If you want to include the kids, find a spot where all will enjoy the day, such as the park (take a picnic lunch), a day trip to the nearest city, museums and hiking.

Check out local events happening in your area – Many areas over the summer have free concerts, events and free days to the museums.  You will be surprised how much fun you can have in your own area!

Finally, do not compare yourself to others who are taking fabulous overseas trips.  This will only make you feel envious and unhappy.  Try focusing on what you want from your staycation, budget, and what will help you relax and switch off from your daily routine.  Enjoy your staycation UMM followers!
